Surrogacy and Gestational Carrier Program

THE SURROGACY PROCESS
6 Well-Established Steps

The Chicago IVF Gestational Carrier Program has been designed with you, the Intended Parents, in mind. We understand that building a family through gestational surrogacy can be a complex, emotionally challenging, and costly endeavor. We have thoughtfully addressed both larger issues, and minor details.

The surrogacy and gestational carrier program has been designed to be user-friendly and to help you achieve your dreams step-by-step.

Step One: Program Identification

We encourage Intended Parents to educate themselves regarding available reproductive options. Furthermore, we encourage Intended Parents to research several surrogacy and gestational carrier programs.

We believe that well-educated Intended Parents will see the benefits of choosing a renowned surrogacy and gestational carrier program like that offered by Chicago IVF.

Step Two: Financial Understanding

Understanding the complicated financial interactions of the gestational surrogacy process can be confusing. We have invested significant effort to help you understand the financial details so that you may make an educated choice.

You may find lower cost estimates at other clinics, but from our experience, their hidden fees and unexpected expenses can be significant.

Our fee estimate is thoughtful, comprehensive and transparent. We have carefully designed it to include all possible costs.

Step Three: Locating the Right Surrogate

There are several options available through which Intended Parents can identify and recruit gestation- al carriers. These include:

  • Word-of-mouth or family members
  • IVF clinic databases of active egg donors and Gestational Surrogates
  • Agencies specializing in the recruitment of egg donors and gestational carriers

Which option is better? In fact, none of the above three recruitment avenues would prove more medically safe than another per se. Each is equally regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The regulations are strict. Patient safety is of paramount importance, so all gestational carriers are tested and screened following FDA guidelines.

A word about surrogacy agencies: Although the regulatory and medical issues are similar, surrogacy agencies differ greatly from one to another in how they handle financial technicalities, insurance issues, and customer service. Some agencies will make the match and offer no further assistance, while others will help guide the couple through the entire process including birth certificate and passport.

If an agency is required, we will assist you in your search for one of high quality.

Chicago IVF works with the top recruitment agencies. As your representatives, we know what questions to ask, what regulatory issues to inspect, and what customer service you are entitled to.

We are your experienced advocates.

Step 4: The Matching Process

Interpersonal Considerations:

Initially, couples and prospective surrogates are encouraged to discuss the type of relationship desired, communication frequency, expectations of all parties, the risks of potential multiple pregnancies, caesarean section and related medical complications. Ultimately, the plan for the actual birth needs to be discussed as well. For legal reasons, state of birth should be discussed. As always, emotional and psychological support issues need to be addressed. It is best that couples and prospective surrogates discuss these topics in advance.

Professional Assistance:

It is at this point in the process that licensed mental health professionals will assist and finalize the match. The goal is that the Intended Parents and the Gestational Surrogate have as wonderful an experience with each other as possible. Again, the Chicago IVF team will act as your advocate to guide you through this process.

Step 5: Legal Issues

Attorney involvement:

Intended Parents and Gestational Surrogates are required to have their own attorneys. Chicago IVF can provide names of those attorneys that are competent and skilled in this area of the law. Ultimately, however, each party must choose and be comfortable with their own attorney.

The parent/surrogate document:

The next step is the drafting of the Intended Parent and Gestational Surrogate document.

Fortunately, we are located in the State of Illinois, a very friendly state to surrogates and Intended Parents. It is one of the most legally-protective states in terms of gestational surrogacy law.

Step 6: Insurance Coverage

Gestational surrogacy insurance coverage is a complex process.

As part of our surrogacy and gestational carrier Program, Chicago IVF offers a comprehensive review of all relevant health insurance policies to determine if the insurance has inclusions/exclusions regarding gestational surrogacy. Because this factor varies, the Intended Parents will not know the cost of insurance until midway through the surrogacy process.

Chicago IVF will work with the best-suited insurance agent for your purposes. As always, our team and our legal experts are well able to guide and counsel you through these processes.
